Donald Trump was aware of Melania Trump’s support for abortion rights “since the day [they] met,” the former First Lady stated on Sunday. She emphasized her belief in individual freedom, expressing a desire to make personal choices about her body without government interference in an interview with Fox News. This stance highlights a divergence from the Republican party led by her husband.
The Guardian reported that Melania Trump’s forthcoming memoir includes a strong defense of women’s rights, particularly regarding abortion access. Scheduled for release on Tuesday, the book comes less than a month before Donald Trump runs for a second term in the November 5 election. In response to the Guardian’s report, she posted on social media, affirming that “individual freedom is a fundamental principle that I safeguard.”
Melania defended her decision to express her abortion views amid her husband’s electoral campaign against Vice President Kamala Harris. Public opinion has generally favored abortion access, contributing to Democratic victories during President Joe Biden’s administration, while many Republican-led state legislatures have sought to impose restrictions based on conservative religious beliefs following the Supreme Court’s removal of federal abortion rights in June 2022.
She clarified, “Well, that was not written in the last week or the last month. That book was written months before, and it was in print months before.” Melania asserted that her beliefs are genuine and intended to be authentic in her writing.
Meanwhile, Harris appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast, reminding listeners that three Supreme Court justices appointed by Trump were part of the conservative majority that overturned the Roe v. Wade decision. Trump has taken pride in those appointments and their impact on abortion rights.
Despite the contrasting views, Melania Trump affirmed that her husband respects her independence. “He lets me believe what I believe,” she said. “He lets me be my own person. And he does respect that, and I respect that as I let him be his own person. He has different beliefs, and he will do what he believes.”
