Two Medirest chefs from the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust are celebrating after their team secured the prestigious NHS Chef of the Year award. Chefs Manuela Miccoli and Alejandro Bedoya Hernandez competed against seven other finalists during an intense five-day event.

The Medirest team prepared a creative menu that included a starter of Venison Bao Buns with Blackberry BBQ Sauce and Celeriac & Apple Slaw, followed by a main of Gnocchi with Hake, Granola, and Tomato Sauce. A vegetarian option was also available, featuring a Lentil Patty, Roast Potato, Celeriac Fondant, and Mushroom Gravy, all culminating in a delightful Tiramisu dessert. The dishes received high praise from the judges.

They were supported by Chef Mentor Keith Turrell, Chef Academy Lead Tutor at HIT Training, who played a crucial role in refining their culinary concepts and enhancing their technical skills. His guidance was vital in helping the chefs deliver exceptional and innovative dishes that impressed the judges.

Manuela Miccoli expressed her joy, stating, “Winning the NHS Chef of the Year award is a dream come true. We worked so hard to achieve this. It was really tough, but I was so glad to be on a team with Alejandro. We have a joint passion for food, and I am so pleased that we were able to show this.”

Alejandro Bedoya Hernandez shared his excitement, saying, “It’s incredible to have won the NHS Chef of the Year. We were thrilled to make it to the final, and winning is something else. I am really proud of what we have accomplished. We practiced our dishes a lot, and I’m glad it all came together on the day.”

Russell Blake, Managing Director of Compass Group UK & Ireland – Healthcare, commented on their achievement, stating, “I am absolutely thrilled for Manuela and Alejandro that they have won NHS Chef of the Year. They exemplify teamwork and a genuine passion for providing exceptional food daily at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust. I am proud of them and delighted that they have received this wonderful recognition.”

Phil Shelley, Senior Operational Manager at NHS England, concluded, “As winners of NHS Chef 2024, Alejandro and Manuela have produced exceptional, nutritious food, raising the bar to new heights. Their focus and calmness will help develop them into NHS culinary ambassadors.”
